Statewide Impact of the JDAI and DMC Efforts
Arizona
Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC):
- The Court
has, for the past two years, implemented process changes to address and
review its use of secure care both within its detention center and through
court ordered commitments to ADJC.
- 264 youth
were committed to ADJC in calendar year 2002 by PCJCC; 162 youth were
committed in 2003; and 96 youth were committed in 2004. This is a 64%
reduction in commitments from Pima County to ADJC over a three-year period.
- The youth
who might have been previously committed to ADJC are remaining in the
community and require services and supervision in order to promote their
rehabilitation and the safety of the community.
- This
reduction in census at ADJC facilitates its own reform efforts.
- The Court
is committed to continuing this effort provided that it can do so without
compromising public safety. It will continue to require resources to be
able to provide supervision and services to these youth.
